Area of Operation
The area of operation of the Kootenay Local Agricultural Society is limited to the area of the map shown below left, and that the use of the Kootenay Mountain Grown label is restricted to the same area.
However, within the area of operations, it seems logical to break the area down into seven regions, and a layout of the regions is shown below on the right.
Breaking the area down into regions will facilitate representation of the members of the society by having one member from each region on the board of directors. (Except the Creston area, where because of the density of agriculture in the area, it has been decided that there should be three directors representing the area.)
It will ease the farmer to farmer certification labour in the Kootenay Mountain Grown program, by having farmers in each region to do inspections in their home region.
In addition, the breakdown into regions will also assist in the development of a community of farmers that can offer support, both professionally and socially within their region – something that in a larger area does not work as well.
The seven regions shown opposite appears to be logical, but should be amended based on input from farmers within each region.
It is recommended that each region meet with their director prior to board meetings to get input and hear of challenges.
