The Society after 4 years is revamping its information systems and updating its internal structure and rules. As an initial step, all specific enquiries relating to Membership, Certification and Marketing should be directed to the Director indicated and not to the administrator.

Your assistance with this will be appreciated.

Please report any links that do not work to the office (klasociety@shaw.ca) The web site is getting so large and complex we are sure that some things have been missed...

Changes to the Kootenay Mountain Grown Produce Standard

This is a change recommended by the certification committee and agreed with the board of directors, it is being passed to the AGM of the society for the members to confirm the change.

Wording Amendment to the KMG Produce Standard to read as follows:

The Kootenay Mountain Grown program requires the use of untreated organic seeds, but permits the use of fungicide-treated seed so long as the fungicides used are listed either in the OMRI list of the Canadian Permitted Substances List.  Potato tubers and eyes are considered seeds.  Seeds used for sales as sprouts must be organically grown.

Potato Seeds, tubers and transplants of perennial crops must be grown according to Kootenay Mountain Grown growing standards or certified organic standards for at least 12 months prior to the appearance of flower buds in order that the crop may be sold as Kootenay Mountain Grown.  Review Committee may require adherence to Kootenay Mountain Grown or organic standards for a period longer than 12 months.

The calendar is in its infancy (the idea being put out there in January 2012) and we hope that as the word goes out, more event information will be entered.

Listings are free but must be submitted in writing to KLAS in the following format:

Type & Name of Event: (workshops/farmers market/seedy sundays etc)

Date & Time of Event:

Location:

Cost: Admission and/or Vendors

The Kootenay Bees web site has been updated at www.kootenaybees.ca - worth having a look…

The Kootenay Mountain Grown web site has been revamped and upgraded at

www.kootenaymountaingrown.org

This is a work in progress - the old site crashed big time and was not able to be reconstructed. About 90% of this new site works and the rest will be brought online as soon as possible.

Annual General Meeting

1 pm, Sunday, 25th March 2012

at the Meeting Room,

Chamber of Commerce, Nelson

The Annual General Meeting of the society will take place this year in Nelson.

As you can see from the table of the right, there are a lot of Directors up for election this year, and we have some areas of the society that do not have a director.

The table below lists people who have decided to put their names forward to stand for election as a director at the AGM.

If any member would like their name to go onto the list and stand as a director please email the office at  (klasociety@shaw.ca).

The commitment as a director is not excessive. There are 4 meetings a year plus the AGM to attend, with all of the work between these dates being undertaken via email correspondence.

The Society is growing strongly, and is making a big difference to local agriculture in our region.

We know we have a lot of supporters out there - both members and non members  and it would be great if a few of you would step forward and commit  about 30 hours a year to help the Society move forward.

Kootenay Mountain Grown

We also have to form each year, a new Certification Committee for the Kootenay Mountain Grown certification system.

The Certification Committee meets once in July, with further discussion and/or decisions being made via email. It’s function is to review in detail each and every file and inspection report of those members certifying under the Kootenay Mountain Grown label.

This is an extremely important part of the functions of the society, and we would like to find some volunteers to make up the 2012 committee. If interested, please pass your name via email to the Kootenay Local Agricultural Society office.

If there are insufficient volunteers to make up the certification committee, the directors have decided to bring forward an amendment to the certification rules requiring each certifying member to take turns sitting on the committee.

A few more volunteers would be appreciated…
